I led the design research, strategy and development of an organizational design toolkit for the Office of Policy & Evaluation at the NYC Department of Education. The project included customized tools to strengthen and unify user research, innovation cycles, and UX/UI consistency for the nation’s largest school district.
As a part-time faculty member, I taught courses within the BBA Strategic Design and Management Program at Parsons School of Design. In addition to developing curriculum and workshops, I taught students to use research, creativity and systems-thinking to propose complex innovations.
Instruments of Empowerment is a systems-level response to challenge the status quo and educational inequities through a redesigned student report card that shares a more dynamic and holistic narrative of a student’s progress. The goal of the instrument, and the dialogues provoked, is to redraw communication and accountability lines, activate collaboration, and empower educators and parents to support students.
Botanical Transmissions is a speculative and trandsdisciplinary design project that translates data into music-by-and-for-plants using a genetic algorithm that responds to the health of the plants at Freshkills Park in Staten Island, NY. The project was created to explore the potential of plant-centered design and prompt dialogue about climate change and our collective responsibility to respond.
ACCESS NYC is an online tool that helps New Yorkers identify public programs or benefits they may be eligible for and also connects them to the right resources. Built with extensive user research and a mobile-first approach, the redesign of ACCESS NYC is a model for how governments can create more relevant and clearer digital experiences and services.
Anthophila Reveries is a speculative design concept that challenges our complacency with the Anthropocene and the privileged position of a human over the natural world and other animals. The concept is a package of artifacts and imaginative-rationale that stem from a fictional residency in which humans live and work amongst anthophila (bees) in reclaimed strip malls that have been converted to sanctuaries of preservation and, more importantly, honor for the insects.
